KISTI-ACTS Co-founds Joint Research Lab

KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) and ACTS (Advanced Cultural Technologies & Services, Daejeon) co-founded a joint research lab to support SMEs to create ultra HD contents using KISTI's supercomputing system. The joint research lab AKIReC (ACTS + KISTI + Research + Center) is located in ACTS Action Center. AKIReC plan to provide high-tech producing environment for creating UHD contents. Local SMEs will be able to utilize supercomputing system for computer graphic and special effects. The SMEs could also develop new merchandises and business models with 3D printing system as well. Both parties agreed to foster an approachable research environment for OSMU (One-Source Multi-Use). It is highly expected that utilization of the supercomputing system is soon to rise in this upcoming era of UHD contents. Dr. Park Young Seo, President of KISTI, noted: "We hope supercomputer simulation-based technologies would be widely used in fields including film making, broadcasting and communications industry." President of ACTS, Lee Hyo-Jeong also expected that the creation of UHD contents would boost the local economy as well.

KISTI Signs MOU with TIPA

KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information) signed a memorandum of understanding with TIPA (Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs). The conclusion of MOU took place at KISTI's head office on Feb. 19th, 2014. This MOU is intended to provide active support for SMEs' R&D planning and technical development. The agreement is to strengthen the public support system for SMEs' R&D planning. SMEs face hardships when planning R&D, for the lack of human resources and material resources. Such hardships prevent SMEs from constructing the very foundation of possible business opportunities, and therefore KISTI and TIPA plan to establish an organic cooperation to revel out difficulties SMEs face. Both parties will also be involved in nurturing future R&D specialists. Dr. Park Young Seo, President of KISTI, noted: "We plan to arrange better opportunities for SMEs with R&D difficulties through the agreement." President of TIPA also expected this MOU to produce synergy for both parties' aid on SMEs."

KISTI Signs MOU with KNOU (Korea National Open Uni...

KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information) concluded a memorandum of understanding with KNOU(Korea National Open University) on Feb. 14th 2014. It is expected for both parties to expand chances of distance learning utilized by KISTI's supercomputing system. KISTI's EDISON (EDucation-research Integration through Simulation On the Net) Platform and KNOU's cyber lab construction will become key foundation of this MOU. KISTI and KNOU Prime College plan to cooperate and create quality content for education of science and technology, develop supercomputer-based training SW, and moreover collaborate on simulation SW, distance learning. Both parties agreed to further continue their cooperation in diverse fields including electronics, machinery, physics, aviation and chemistry. Dr. Park Young Seo, President of KISTI, noted that the MOU with KNOU will be a magnificent opportunity for KISTI to expand practical use of cyber learning platform, EDISON, and supercomputer-based simulation SW.

Dr. Lee was honored for his second listing on such publications, the first being a publication of the remarkable 'Marquis Who's Who'. At Dept. of R&D System Development in KISTI's NTIS Center, Dr. Lee contributed to increasing efficiency of nationwide research and development (R&D) by constructing NTIS, National Science and Technology Information Service. Dr. Lee has been recognized as the nation's leading expert of data processing research, with more than 110 research journals published, including SCI(E) level journals.

Presidential Council on IP hold its 4th KIPnet conference on Dec. 16th. KIPnet, founded last April, is a national consultative group for IP-related policies. Its main functions include policy proposal of IP creation, IP protection, and IP application, moreover stimulating all related organizations' communication and cooperation. Yoon Jong-yong, chairperson of Presidential Council on IP primarily stressed the importance of human network, that of whom create, protect, and share IP information. Yoon also stressed that enterprises reaching for the global market need to get ahold of strong compatitiveness in IP field. KISTI, along with 100 other related organizations·industrial groups, attended KIPnet and shook hands with Presidential Council on IP at IP·technology Evaluation MOU. On the spot, KISTI agreed to cooperate with KTFC, KIPA, and KIAT on building a market-containable evaluation system, and integration of related evaluation·transaction information. It is highly expected that such mutual cooperation of KISTI, KTFC, KIPA, and KIAT will advance creating a industrial·financial ecosystem, according to Ko Gi-suk, director-general of IP strategy. Above mentioned organizations will: provide evaluation guideline for their users, spread the guideline on both public and private level, create and share the DB system, amplify newer cases, provide open evaluation management and policy support for IP finance revitalization.

KISTI held 2013 Korea-China Tech-Fair on Sep.9th to 12th in Changchun Province in China in cooperation with Changchun, Jilin and Tumen Provincial Office. This year, about 36 technology tranfer and MoU were concluded in 32 companies during the fair. About 430 companies participated in the fair, 30 companies from Korea and 400 companies from China and other countries each. This Tech-Fair has been organized by KISTI since 2011 to help its ASTI member companies advnace into China and is one of the biggest Tech-Fair between Korea and China. The number of technology transfer and MoU concluded during the fair were 14 in 2011, 26 in 2012 each. Considering the 36 cases concluded this year,technology transfer between Korea and China?is showing upweard trend. Dr.Park?Young-seo?said?"KISTI will do its upmost to help ASTI member companies develop new technologies with all possible resources of KIST and to find?their?clients?and?market?in?China".

KISTI has concluded MoU with NCSTE, which is National Center for Sceience and Technology Evaluation in Kazakhstan on Aug.21 in its head office. This MoU was concluded as a?follow-up for KISTI's visit to NCSTE?on?May.? While visiting NCSTE, KISTI had a chance to?explain the history, deveopment process and outstanding performance of NTIS, an integrated national R&D management system, to NCSTE staff and also learned that NCSTE is in the position of distributing national R&D funds and is in need of establising nation R&D management system. As a result of this?meeting, KISTI and NCSTE both agreed to pursue?mutual cooperation in the field?of national?science and technology managment system. By concluding the MoU.?both sides will seek the way of establishing NTIS system in Kazhkhstan step by step?including feasibility?study.?

In line with this regard,?Vice Minister of MSIP?invited?some of?ASTI(Association of Science and Technology Information)?member companies to listen their needs and difficulties to?seek the way that government and KISTI?can?do?together. Participantes?were briefed on KISTI's supporting program for SMEs such as field support, 1-1 mentoring service and?supercomputing simulation?program. Lee Sang-mok,?Vice Minister of MSIP has emphasized the?role of SMEs in the Creative Economy which is the core policy objective of new government and promised that MSIP and public institutes will do their utmost to support and help SMEs to be highly competitive and to be reborn as a growth engine of Korean Economy.
