Supercomputing Headquarter is here With you.


Hello and welcome! I’m Jihyun Kang, Today I’d like to introduce SuperComputing headquarter which is core of Korean science technology. Supercomputer, it is not new to us anymore because it has been used in various ways for innovative industry in Korea as well as abroad thesedays


Supercomputing market has been grown 7.6% every year in global, and its demands have been dramatically increased in many aspects, which are innovation of advanced science technology, strengthening industry competitiveness, crime prevention and national risk management.


The research & development is bigger and complicated overtime, so industry and academic cooperation is needed. Therefore, the infrastructure has to be built to solve needs, and supercomputing office is performing the role. 

 

First of all, Let’s see history of Korean supercomputing headquarter.

Supercomputing head office, has been established super computer resource and infra for 30years from 1988 to 2017 as the center of science technology in Korea


To look more deeply of history of 30 years, in 1988, the first stage of supercomputer business launched with Cray 2S, in 1993, 2nd super computer CRAY-YMPC 916/512 also launched infollowing. Through that, in1995, computer network was more activated and rate of use had been increased.


From 2001 to 2003, 3rdcomputer NOVEL, IBMp690 was launched, and in 2004, ‘Hamel’, applied cluster system as the next generation super computer, used inmanystudies.


From 2008 to 2011, the 4th GAIA1 (IBMp595), TTION1 (SUNBlade6048), GAIA2 (IBMp595), TTION2 (SUNBlades6048), these four supercomputer carried out operational management of 36.6TFlops.


In addition, in 2016, Supercomputing head office will have the 5th computer to grow up as the core infra of national potential competitiveness and become super brain to achieve a creative economy.

I’m expected more on the next supercomputing head quarter performance.


Now we will see more details about in what cases supercomputers are used and How we works

The entire scale of data created in conducting cosmological simulation is about 250TB. For transmitting massive data in sync with Korean and other international institutions, KREONET of KSTI, GLOLIAD and super computer were all indispensable devices for our astronomical study.

The construction cost of particle accelerator used in particle physics is enormous and the scale of manpower is also colossal. And this accelerator is used to experiment a detector. The amount of data earned from the detector is also astronomical that a network of scientific technology and the operation of super computer are absolutely necessary in transmitting, saving and treating the data from this detector. 

 

We understand that Each center is taking important role. Based on these roles, supercomputing headquarter is growing up as ‘super partner’ with Korean industries. Then, What is the future that supercomputing will create?

 

Supercomputing headquarter has purpose to become TOP 7th super computing developed country intheworld, based on ‘the first basic plan on promoting super computing’ from 2013 to 2017. It will put efforton 1)maximizing utilization of super computing by creating the new demand 2) resource development and professional human resource development toestablish world TOP10 super computing service and 3) independent supercomputing development ability and foundation.


Today, you understand and know more about supercomputing history, successes from efforts, and vision in the future.

To become science knowledge based developed country as we hoped, also to actualize TOP7 supercomputing country in the world, supercomputing headquarter is putting the best efforts to create the best value even at this point.
