    'Emerging Tech Seminar 2014' - Next 10 Years

      KISTI has announced 10 promising technologies at ‘Emerging Tech Seminar 2014’ on Nov. 11th. 2014 is the 9th seminar for the name of ‘Emerging Tech Seminar’, and KISTI has been announcing the most prominent and promising new technologies under the support of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and NST, National Research Council of Science & Technology. The seminar is serving its role as a community sharing future technologies and R&D strategies. This year, the 10 technologies were chosen according to the national vision of the future – healthy society, smart society, creative convergent society, safe society, and sustainable nature &society. The technologies are as in the following. ▲ Autoimmune Diseases Treatment ▲ Optogenetics Technology ▲ Biomimetic Robots ▲ Learning Analysis ▲ Cloud Environmental Security Technology ▲ 4D Printing ▲ Transporting without Human Resources ▲ Intelligent Transportation System V2X Technology ▲ Lithium Sulful Battery ▲ Metamaterial Technology The list of 10 promising technologies is extracted from more than 8,000 new technologies through KISTI’s Big Data analysis and experts’ verification system. Dr. Hahn Sun-Hwa, President of KISTI, noted: “Hopefully Emerging Tech Seminar will provide SMEs with better R&D information to challenge the future.” KISTI is also providing related data through MIRIAN website (http://mirian.kisti.re.kr).

    STIC(Ethiopia) Visits KISTI

    On Nov. 12, Science and Technology Information Center (STIC, Ethiopia) visited KISTI headquarter in Daejeon. Dr. Hahn Sun-hwa, President of KISTI, received STIC deligation for an in-depth communication between two leaders of each institute. The visit was composed with introductory sessions of each party, and KISTI gave out introductions on Information Distribution and National Supercomputing. More upcoming collaboration and cooperation of two institutes are expected in the future.

    KISTI-Elsevier Joint-Project: Big Data Analysis

    KISTI is planning to jointly analyze S&T research reports with Elsevier, a renowned global scholar publisher. KISTI and Elsevier signed a Memorandum of Understanding at KISTI Daejeon Headquarters on Nov. 6. KISTI and Elsevier will ▲Develop data-mining, indexing, analyzing technologies, ▲Provide Pay-per-view service of Elsevier’s original texts through NDSL, ▲Cooperate on sharing global level publishing technology. This Memorandum of Understanding would not only benefit both parties but also benefit researchers and the general public, as Elsevier is going to provide KISTI S&T papers from 2,500 scholarly science journals. KISTI will be constructing a database based on such vast amount of research data, and provide relevant and reliable information to the users. Elsevier will participate in sharing the scholarly publishing technology and know-how, and it is expected to enhance competitiveness of Korean domestic publishing market. Dr. Hahn Sun-hwa, President of KISTI, noted that this MOU will be a wonderful opportunity to promote data-mining, moreover benefit the researchers in utilizing scholarly reports.

    KISTI-NVIDIA signs MOU for MPCC

    Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) and NVIDIA signed an MOU on Aug. 6th for the construction of KISTI-NVIDIA MPCC, Massively Parallel Computing Center. More Massively Parallel Computers using GPU(Graphic Processing Unit) are now listed on the TOP 500 Supercomputer List, and are being actively researched and utilized as the next generation of Supercomputing Architecture. Domestically, however, not many related studies are underway due to the lack of professional manpower. Through the signing of this MOU, KISTI-NVIDIA MPCC plan to operate GPU based Massively Parallel Computer expert training program. Moreover, MPCC will build a GPU exclusive system for developing and utilizing the new generation Massively Parallel Computer. Dr. Jysoo Lee, Head of KISTI National Supercomputing R&D Division noted: "MOU between KISTI National Supercomputing R&D Division and the global-leading corporation NVIDIA is much expected to amplify the synergy in training domestic experts and invigorating related research."

    KISTI signs MOU with IITD(Indian Institute of Technology Delhi)

    On Aug. 4th, KISTI signed MOU with IITD, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. IITD is a Government-founded technology institution, and also is a leading institute of India's ICT field. IITD is going through diverse in-depth studies on Big Data and Computer Science. KISTI Software Research Center signed MOU with working level and higher level researchers of both sides. Sides decided to establish a firm foundation of cooperation for Big Data research based on this MOU. Dr. Won-kyung Sung, Head of Software Research Center, noted: "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi being the heart of India's Science and Technology, we expect to promote more co-research including Information Mining and Big Data technology overall."

    NTIS for KOREA-KAZAKH Summit Agenda

    On the 19th of June, President Park Geun-Hye and her Kazakhstan counterpart President Nursultan Nazarbayev had a summit meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan. The summit is the 12th between the leaders of two countries, since the two countries formed bilateral ties in 1992. During the summit meeting, the construction of a thermal plant and petrochemical complex was raised as main discussion points, as well as medicine cooperation, visa waiver and so on. Along with the national agendas, Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) of Korea and Ministry of Education and Science (MES) of Kazakhstan signed a MOU for KOR-Kazakh national R&D Information System construction. The cooperation on building Kazakh's national R&D Information System will be based on Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI)'s NTIS system. Upon the request of NCSTE Kazakhstan, an evaluating institute for science and technology, KISTI will actively participate in the construction. KISTI and NCSTE will be going through a feasibility study on the system's construction, starting September 2014. Both parties will be able to plan ahead for building a solid R&D Information System, to boost Kazakhstan's scientific and technological advancement.

    2014 KOREA-CHINA Tech Fair in Daejeon, Korea

    On 26th of June, the 4th KOREA-CHINA Tech Fair was held at DCC, Daejeon. The fair was held in cooperation with Jilin Province, especially Changchun, Jilin and Tumen area. KOREA-CHINA Tech Fair is intended to work out as a bridge between SMEs of two nations, guiding them together for better business and trade options. This year, more than 300 attendees attended the fair as supporting personnel and CEOs of SMEs. KOREA-CHINA Tech Fair has matched 74 cases of MOU during the last 4 events, more if including consulting processes of SMES. SMEs oftentimes find it difficult to share technological information on an international level. With the abundant experience within the last three fairs, KISTI has been providing reliable chances for ASTI-affiliated SMEs to expand overseas. Dr. Park Yeong-Seo, President of KISTI, noted: "Now that the technological innovation and expansion of SMEs are of such importance, KISTI will keep strengthening our cooperation with Chinese government agencies and Chinese SMEs to create more cases of successful cooperation."

    Advanced Logic Applications - Quantum Computers by Dr. Hoon Ryu

    Advanced Logic Applications - Quantum Computers - Design of Si-based Qubit Systems using High Performance Computer -   High performance computers (HPCs) accelerate the feasibility of quantum information processing. Quantum computers, processing the logic information with a sequence of the quantum bit (qubit), have obtained keen attention due to their extremely good efficiency in solving large-scale problems. Silicon, a well-known semiconductor material, has been regarded as a great material candidate for quantum computers as its decoherence time is extremely large. Using HPCs, KISTI works on modeling researches with two purposes: (1) pre-estimate Si-based multi-qubit systems to provide experimentalists with a guide-line of potential device designs, and (2) present theoretical evidences to validate physically realized device prototypes. While the experimental realization should become the central part of advanced device research, the experimental work itself is hard to be accepted as a good research outcome unless the result is validated in a theory perspective. Since 2011, KISTI have started quantum device modeling research. Dr. Hoon Ryu, a senior researcher at KISTI, developed a parallel solver to compute the electronic structures of nanoscale devices in a 3D manner. Pursuing the research collaboration with Purdue University in United States and University of New South Wales in Australia, Dr. Ryu has led the modeling part of collaborative researches. The team produces quite fruitful and world-leading research outcomes. In 2012, the study of the metallic property of “ultrathin P-doped Si nanowires”, which could be used as inter-connectors for Si qubit systems, was published in . In the same year, the team demonstrated the feasibility of a single P-doped Si qubit system, publishing the result in . In 2013, the design guideline for ultra-thin Si-P nanowires are published in (IF 6.2). In 2014, the multi-qubit systems have been demonstrated for the first time using Si-P, and the result was again published in . Dr. Ryu said that “We have so far succeeded in getting 2~3 P atoms integrated in Si bulk. To expand the scalability of Si-based multi-qubit systems, much more P atoms need to be successfully integrated, guaranteeing reasonably good device performances. We are moving to the next step for integration of 4~8 P atoms, and HPC-based modeling research of course will play a key role because it not only accelerates the experimental work by estimating performances in advance, but also presents a comprehensive theoretical framework of Si-P electronics that could be extremely useful for the potential device design."   Dr. Hoon Ryu 1.     Kenya Chuka Delegation Visits KISTI

    A delegation from Kenya Chuka University, constituted by Prof. Njoka, Prof Ngunjiri, Prof. Kagwanja and Mr. Mbaya, visited KISTI for a study tour on April 7th. The purpose of the visit was to share information and familiarize with modern Science and Technology Institutes in Korea, with the aim of establishing a similar institution in Kenya in the future. An informative meeting including Dr. Kim Jeong Hwan's presentation and Q&A session was held, with KISTI researchers of Information Service Center, Div. of Advanced Information Research. The meeting was followed by institute tour, introducing KISTI's history and current functions . Both parties expect the Kenya delegation's visit to be a stepping-stone for further collaboration in the future.

    KISTI Attends KRCF-NARL Workshop

    KRCF-NARL Workshop was held from March 31st to April 3rd. The workshop is held on the foundation of KRCF and NARLabs' collaboration, which is intended for building a solid ground for Korea and Taiwan's government-funded research institutes to form an international research network. On April 1st, Dr. Hahm Jaegyoon, Dr. Lee Ji-Woo of KISTI Supercomputing Service Center, Dr. Cho Buseung of KREONET Center and Dr. Kim Jayhoon of Information Service Center participated and each presented on their field of research. Researchers from participating institutes shared their recent discoveries and prediction of the research and development trend. Each speech was highly simulative, deriving in-depth discussions. The presentation and discussion was followed by KISTI lab tour for workshop participants from Taiwan, introducing the history, the present and the future of KISTI.It is expected that KISTI and NARLab's delegation members will further discuss possible collaborative ideas. The workshop was a notable stepping-stone for both institute to develop a deeper relationship in the future.
